3 post-workout alternatives

August 12th, 2008

LatteAnyone that workouts regularly knows that you have to put something in your body after exercise. What’s the best something, though? Most gym rats reach for the whey protein shakes and other expensive post-workout supplements, which are great. But how about an alternative post-workout snack…how about a whole-grain cereal, a bite of Indian takeout, or a big fat non-fat latte? RealAge says these are real possibilities.

Why these three snacks? Because they have something in common, capable of helping the body recover post-workout — the three C’s: Carbs, Curcumin, and Caffeine.

A carbohydrate-rich snack like cereal restores glycogen — the stuff muscles use for energy — and helps conquer fatigue. Curcumin, a substance found in the Indian spice turmeric, helps minimize muscle inflammation. And caffeine. It works to block muscle-pain-producing substances. Coffee has other health benefits too.

Get Ready for IE8!

July 7th, 2008

Internet Explorer 8 is Microsoft’s response to the growing interest in interactive web services and rich online experiences. This is Microsoft’s second attempt to build a browser that follows standard compliant HTML and CSS. So, will designers and developers embrace this new Internet Explorer?

IE8

Maybe. IE8 is becoming CSS 2.1 compliant. The beta release also fixes many of the browser inconsistencies and more closely supports the HTML 4.01 Specification. According to Microsoft they are giving top priority to Web standards interoperability which helps drive web developers and designers toward the ideal of “write once, run anywhere”, freeing up more time to innovate rather than modify content for different browsers. (We’ll see)

Microsoft says that browsing with the default setting may cause content written for previous versions of IE to display differently than intended. They have provided a meta-tag work around that is usable on a per-page or per-site level to maintain backwards compatibility with IE7. So at least for a time being developers and designers will be able to use their current code.

Microsoft has launch several sites to prepare designer and developer for the new IE version:

Loud Enough Earphones - A good choice for kids

July 1st, 2008

Loud Enough EarphonesOne thing about me is that I have four children ranging from four years to fourteen. All of them have mp3 players of some sort and love to listen to music. One of our concerns as parents is the volume in which the kids listen to their music. I stumbled across these this morning and thought I would share with everyone.

There seems to be a headphone for every purpose nowadays. You have headphones for the gym, headphones for the plane, and even earbuds that work underwater. There are also headphones made especially for the little ones in your life, although the choices are limited. Given the concerns over audio volume and hearing damage, it’s not terribly surprising that headphone sets for children are few and far between. Luckily, more and more headphone manufacturers are taking advantage of volume-limiting technology to offer child-friendly models. One such company is Ultimate Ears, which has released the Loud Enough Earphones, a $40 pair that comes in a variety of colors. Read the full review.
